Welcome to the South Wellington Coin Society

The South Wellington Coin Society was formed in March of 1997 by a group of six coin collectors interested in getting together on a regular basis to trade information on coins, medals and tokens of interest to all collectors. The club founders felt the community needed a club to educate in the area of coin collecting and to bring an awareness of Canadian history through Numismatics. The club has grown much in the years since then.

We have always had a commitment to education. At almost every meeting there has been a live speaker, a video or a slide presentation all to do with the many aspects of numismatics. SWCS has not hesitated to reap the benefit of the slide presentations made available to them by the Ontario Numismatic Association, the Canadian Numismatic Association and the London Numismatic Society. The club has also been fortunate to have had several entertaining and educational speakers visit the club.

Some parts of this website are restricted to members only and we encourage you to join our organization. Members will find archived copies of our newsletter as well as a much expanded history of the club available to them in the download section and discussion forums. Membership is $10.00 per year and can be paid at club meetings.

………that in 1895 George Sleeman of Guelph, Ontario brewing fame built the first Electric Railway the city was desperately in need of. The original charter was drawn up and a by-law passed on August 7, 1894. Construction began in April of 1895 with the first spike officially driven in on Waterloo Avenue in front of the Sleeman home, which was adjacent to the brewery, by Sleeman’s wife Sarah on June 20, 1895. The Guelph Railway Company began with three closed cars on September 17, 1895. Normal service operated from 5AM to 11PM Monday to Saturday every 20 minutes. Besides Sleeman’s ‘Silvercreek Brewery’ being on the route the Bell Piano Company, Guelph’s largest employer, was also at close proximity.
